HISTORICAL NOTE

The first positive reference to a mill is in the late 13th century when the Okeovers had a mill at Sheen, more than likely Brund Mill. The mill was certainly used for grinding corn in 1748 but may well have struggled to support itself simply by grinding corn and therefore by 1790 it was being used as a spinning mill when three members of the Cantril family started a Calico business. The mill appears to have continued in the textile trade as, in 1800 it was being worked by a partnership of cotton manufacturers. John Beardmore worked it as a flax mill in 1851 and it was advertised for letting as such in 1871. However it was being used for grinding corn again in 1878 although out of use again by 1881 and then proceeded into a period of long decline. By the 1960’s the building had started to collapse was only saved from total dereliction by our clients, Mr and Mrs Andrew Humphries, who in conjunction with local and national conservation bodies turned the derelict mill building into a comfortable home. Since it restoration between 1975 and 1984 the property has been featured in many magazines and even had an appearance on television.
